Existing Li-ion batteries revolutionized the world, but while they approach their theoretical limits, they still suffer from limited energy density, fire hazard, high-cost and environmental impact issues. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) technology is a promising path to address most of these problems, but existing Li-S batteries have impractical short cycle lifetimes and energy efficiencies.
While a number of competing Li-S startups aim to mitigate the cycle life and energy efficiency issues, THIOSPARK has found a way to radically solved these problems by developing a novel solid electrolyte, which eliminates polysulfide shuttling and drastically enhances the number of times the high energy density battery can be discharged.
Our technology reaches 5x the energy density, is 30% lighter, cheaper, and has a much lower fire hazard (due to its non-flammable electrolyte) than Li-ion batteries and does not require the sourcing of rare metals from unsustainable sources.
